Virginia Birchfield 72019-0095.jpg

Virginia Birchfield is a graduate of the Columbus College of Art & Design where she studied Interior Design. It was while taking furniture and wood sculpture classes, that she discovered her passion for creating pieces for her spaces. She combines her knowledge of wood, with the metalworking and painting skills that she developed while working for her fathers auto restoration business and applies them to her work today.

Virginia incorporates contrasting materials with live-edge wood, such as glass, metal and concrete which are integrated into sculptural pieces. Her workshop is located in rural Knox County, Ohio where she salvages wood from locally sourced trimmings that are cut from naturally fallen trees. She draws inspiration for her designs from the character of decay and deterioration and captures these processes by slicing or carving into, to reveal the unique beauty of each piece of wood.

'My work is about the harmony that happens when you juxtapose raw organic shapes with sleek geometric forms. It's about balancing the materials and the beauty in the simplicity.'
